What is a Beta Reader?

Beta Reader Meaning: A beta reader is someone who reads an early draft of a novel and provides feedback on the story, characters, and plot. A beta reader is not an editor. I do not expect you to correct grammar, punctuation, or spelling errors (although you certainly can if you catch any mistakes). What I expect is for you to read the novel in its entirety and to give me thoughtful and constructive feedback based on your reading experience.

Who am I looking for?

I am looking for anyone who would like to become a beta reader for a historical novel. Fear the Wind is a young adult historical fiction novel set in England in 1860. This is the third novel in the Heed the Wind series.
SYNOPSIS: Pregnant and accused of high treason against the crown, an appointment with the gallows looms ever closer. Desperation drives Staletta to flee to the countryside for protection, but when her undefeated and corrupt defense lawyer unexpectedly switches sides, justice will have to prevail over corruption or the court will condemn her to the gallows and all hope of raising the child in her womb will be lost forever.

Requirements

  • I’m seeking committed individuals to volunteer as a beta reader. Please do not sign-up to be a beta reader if you have other commitments that will prevent you from completing the beta reading process.  I understand how busy life gets sometimes, so please try to be realistic when deciding if this is a good fit for you.
  • You’ll need to be able to read the book and provide feedback within the month of January and the first week in February.

How it works

  • The beta reading process will officially begin on January 14 and run through the rest of January.
  • I will be sending the novel to you in two parts over the course of the weeks so you can read at your leisure!
  • I will have questions at the end of both sections that you will be able to answer. Submit your answers and that’s it!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I still be a beta reader if I’ve never done it before?
Yes! I am open to first time beta readers, as long as you’re willing to commit the time and energy it will take to read my novel, leave feedback, and respond to questions accordingly.
  • Do I have to be a writer in order to be a beta reader?
No, you only need to be a reader. The purpose of a beta reader is to gauge the entertainment value of a story, which is what readers do best!
  • Can I share your novel with someone else?
No–if you agree to beta read for me, then you are agreeing to keep my work strictly confidential.
